Der Baubeginn der Burg geht auf das Jahr 1000 zur\u00fcck und beruht auf noch \u00e4lteren Bauten.&nbsp;Die Burg liegt auf einen nur von Nordwesten aus zug\u00e4nglichen Schieferfelsen, 150 Meter \u00fcber dem rechten Ufer der Sauer, 360 bis 380 m \u00fcber dem Meeresspiegel.<br>Die Ruinen dieser Anlage zeugen heute noch von einer bedeutenden Feste, die etwa 151 m lang und 53 m breit war, mit einer Fl\u00e4che von 12.000 m2, umgeben von einer starken Ringmauer mit Zwingern und 11 T\u00fcrmen&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Um das Jahr 1000 entstand aus einer primitiven h\u00f6lzernen Befestigungsanlage eine erste feste Burg aus Stein. Ausgrabungen brachten r\u00f6mische, merowingische, karolingische und ottonische Spuren zu Tage. Von dieser ersten romanisch-gotischen Burg zeugen jetzt nur noch Bergfried und Ringmauer, heute innere Ringmauer. Die \u00e4u\u00dfere Ringmauer, mit acht T\u00fcrmen bewehrt, wurde um 1384 fertig gestellt. Gleichzeitig entstand das Stolzemburger Haus mit seinem gotischen class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t\tNach 1472 entstand die Vorburg mit der au\u00dfen durch Palisaden gesch\u00fctzten Toranlage, der m\u00e4chtigen Artilleriebastion und einem von vier T\u00fcrmen flankierten Graben, der durch eine Zugbr\u00fccke gesichert war. Als 1512 der letzte Herr derer von Bourscheid ohne Nachkommen starb, errichteten seine Erben drei verschiedene Wohnungen auf der Burg; die von Metternich im alten Palas und im Bergfried, die Zant von Merl im unteren Teil der Oberburg und die von Ahr im Stolzemburger Haus.Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde die Burg um ein Zugangstor mit Artilleriebastionen erg\u00e4nzt. Mit dem Einfall der Franzosen 1794 endete die Feudal- und Burgenzeit. Im Herbst 1802 wurde das Bourscheider Archiv wegen der \u00dcbernahme des Schlosses durch den Erben Freiherr von Schmidtburg, Kammerherr des Kurf\u00fcrsten und Erzbischofs von Trier, nach Gem\u00fcnden im Hunsr\u00fcck gebracht.1812 lie\u00df Schmidtburg seinen Besitz St\u00fcck f\u00fcr St\u00fcck versteigern: Dielen, Treppen, T\u00fcren und sogar einzelne Balken. In den Registern von Bourscheid ist jeder Verwaltungsakt festgehalten. So auch alle Urteile, die seit 1095 auf Burscheid gesprochen wurden. Die kompletten Originale lagern in Gem\u00fcnden, als Kopien haben sie die Burgfreunde in Bourscheid, in zehn B\u00fcchern zusammengefasst. Nach der Versteigerung zerfiel die Burg zu einer Ruine. Die Ruinen wurden 1936 als \u201ehistorisches Denkmal\u201c klassifiziert und 1972 vom Staat erworben. Seitdem wurde aufwendig ausgegraben und restauriert. Nur zwei Geb\u00e4ude auf dem Burggel\u00e4nde sind nach altem Vorbild rekonstruiert: die Pf\u00f6rtnerwohnung und das Stolzemburger
